You Won’t Regret Taking the Photos; But You Might Regret Skipping Them

There’s this thing we do as moms.. we wait. We wait until life slows down. Until the house isn’t so messy. Until we feel a little more put together. Until we fit back into those jeans or lose the 10 pounds. We tell ourselves next season will be better or I’ll book when things calm down a bit. But if we’re being honest… when does it ever really calm down? As a newborn and family photographer here in Macon, Missouri, I talk to so many moms who feel this way. And I get it, because I’m right there in the thick of life too. But what I’ve learned (both in my own life and from the families I photograph) is that there really is no “perfect” time. There’s just right now.Right now might look like growing a baby. Or being in those brand new, barely sleeping postpartum days. Or chasing toddlers who never stop moving. Or juggling school, sports, and all the things that come with older kids. Every season feels full. Every season feels a little overwhelming in its own way. And every single one of those seasons matters.

The truth is, these photos were never meant to be about looking perfect.

They’re about the way your baby fits in your arms right now. The way your toddler reaches for you without thinking. The way your kids look at you like you’re their safe place. That’s the kind of stuff that you can’t recreate later. That’s what you’re going to want to remember. And I know it’s easy to focus on what you don’t love right now. I hear it all the time; “I just don’t feel like myself yet” or “I want to wait until I feel better in my body.” But your kids? They don’t see any of that. They just see you. Their mom. The one who holds them and shows up for them every single day. One day, they’re going to look back at these photos and they’re not going to notice if your hair wasn’t perfect or if your outfit wasn’t just right. They’re going to see how much you loved them. They’re going to see what their childhood felt like. And honestly… one day you will too. Even if it doesn’t feel like it right now, there will come a time when you wish you could go back and just sit in this season for a minute. Hold them a little longer. See those tiny details again. That’s why this matters so much.

Living here in Macon, Missouri, we’re lucky to have the kind of simple, natural beauty that makes documenting these moments feel easy. The golden evenings, the open fields, the way fall shows off every single year- it’s the perfect backdrop for your real life. Nothing over the top, just you and your people. I also serve families in Columbia, Moberly, Kirksville, Hannibal, and the surrounding areas, and no matter where the session takes place, the goal is always the same—capturing your life as it is right now. Not posed and perfect, but real and meaningful. Because motherhood moves fast. Faster than we expect. The newborn stage, the toddler years, the busy school seasons—they all come and go. And the in-between moments, the ones that don’t feel like a big deal at the time, are often the ones we miss the most later.

So if you’ve been waiting for the “right time,” this is your reminder that you don’t need to.

You don’t need to lose the weight.

You don’t need to have everything figured out.

You don’t need life to slow down first.

You just need to show up. Because you won’t regret taking the photos. But you might regret putting them off.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a newborn or family session in Macon, Missouri or nearby, I would truly love to be there for it- to capture your family, your story, and this season exactly as it is.
